Everything is pain. Especially my left hip. And my brain.

But something like a draft is done, and mailed off to [livejournal.com profile] truepenny, [livejournal.com profile] casacorona, and [livejournal.com profile] arcaedia. The end is a horrific kludge, and I don't care.

I'm going to drink a beer and eat curry.

Winter is coming. Which means 'tis almost the season for Jethro Tull. ;)

(Actually, around here, Tull Season is pretty much any time. But any excuse to break out those wonderful songs about cold weather and dysfunctional families is a good excuse.)

(That would be from the first Tull tour I ever saw: the Rock Island tour, which I attended in Halloween at the New Haven Coliseum in 1989.)

And now, it's time to quit stalling and try to write the last chapter of this book. Nothing left but the kaboom, anyway. THE END IS NIGH.

I'd rather be doing all sorts of things.

Karen Memory just keeps on trucking. I should be done by now, but my nice little 80K book has burgeoned to 90K and climbing. Like this:

90358 / 80000 words. 113% done!

Yeah, I'm 113% done, all right.

And I just wrote two of my favorite paragraphs ever, but I can't share 'em because they're spoilers. Just so you know, in 2015, they're the ones involving Boris and Ivan and the hairpin.

I have written the Boom and the Before I Kill You Mister Bond. If I can get through the Daring Hexcape tonight, there's nothing left but the Climactic Space Battle and the Denouement.

Things I have discovered while stumbling through the end of the book: You know how cocoa powder is hydrophobic and it's an absolute bitch to get the hot milk stirred into it without lumps of dry powdery shit interfering? Well, if you stir a tablespoon of booze into the cocoa and sugar first, there's no problem!

Let's hear it for solvents and chemistry!

Best tyop of the last while: I pressed my burned face to the cool meta and sighed.

And back to the book mines, and Andrew Bird who is keeping me from crying with book not done.

matociquala: (bear by san)
Well, that's 80,000 words. The book is theoretically done at the contracted length... except I still have two and a half climaxes to go. The protagonists are walking up the beach toward the antepenultimate confrontation with about as much plan as a pack of player characters.

This won't end well.

But I got to type antepenultimate, and how often does that happen?

I wrote 3000 words today, and got them done in time to take the dog out for a leisurely sunset run, since it got above 20 degrees and all. Then I ate a lot of curry and decided to spend my dinner carbs on a cocktail rather than rice. It consisted of 1 part Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay coconut rum, 1 part pomegranate liqueur, 2 parts unsweetened 100% cranberry juice, .5 part Rose's sweetened lime juice (that's Rose's lime cordial for you UK types), and the juice of half a fresh lime. Shaken over ice and consumed rather quickly, with a pinch of crushed reds sprinkled on top and a lime wedge.

I am calling it a Captain Kidd, because what else do you call a piratical drink made with cranberries if not naming it after New England's best known and most controversial privateer?

There are photos.

Since my brain is now dribbling out my ears (this is more book- than alcohol- related. Alas, the drink was four hours ago.), you get photos rather than sense.

Here's where the magic happens:

Here's a dog with a teddy bear:

And here are two scenes from our run:

matociquala: (writing plot octopus)

77000 / 80000 words. 96% done!

Surprising no-one, this isn't going to be done in another 3,000 words. But at this point, I just have to get everybody to the site of the climactic space battle, and get the climactic space battle to happen, and then there's some other stuff, and some denouement. I might be done in another 10,000 words. That's the plan, anyway.

It's not getting finished before Friday, either, I don't think, since try as I might I can't seem to get the damned thing to start rolling downhill and dragging me along behind it. It's been level-and-fulcrum work the whole way: It's going, and it's solid, but it could be a bit less hard.

Oh well. It's going. And that's what matters.

And it feels like a good book. It feels fun and playful and sharp, and there keep being bits of narration or dialogue that make me smirk while I'm writing them. That's always a good sign.

A lot of it is Karen's voice. My favorite sentence of hers today: "I don't know if it was the colors on his airship and his uniform that made me think Mister Captain Minneapolis Colony If That Was His Real Name Which I Doubt might be sympathetic, but I remembered Priya pointing them out, and that they'd made her homesick."

She's as much fun to write as Jenny was. She just doesn't run off at the mouth quite so much. More's the pity.
matociquala: (writing genocide)
Zeno's novel continues. I think I'm just as far from the end of the book as I was when I started this morning, despite having written ten pages.

I have to remind myself that this always happens at the end of the book.
matociquala: (criminal minds fate)
Whew. Well, I have been a productive bear!

[livejournal.com profile] stillsostrange and I survived the zombie run, despite bankruptcy (theirs), cold (Texas's), and insufficient packing (mine.)

I'm plugging away on Karen Memory, though I've hit that bit in the middle of the book where I have to stop and think about things. This is complicated by some reasonably scary family medical stuff that's causing me fairly significant anxiety. Still hoping to make my deadline, but it might be a near thing. Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] scott_lynch will be coming out to visit me after his Exciting Toronto Book Tour! (He's signing at the beautiful Bakka Phoenix this weekend!) and that will help make everything better.

But the really exciting news is that Emma and Will and I have finally finished "Dark Leader." Or at least, nearly. It's got one scene left to be written, and then it goes to beta read, and there will be NEW MUCH-DELAYED SHADOW UNIT. And after that, three more episodes. 0.0

And I just got a bunch of other small projects cleared up. So all that's left is Karen, really. And some nonfiction stuff I need to do.

Karen Memory is going very well, not to jinx myself. Yesterday was only a mediocre day, but today I found the alpha state and the font of words and made everything happen. I'm moving to a protocol of writing first thing in the morning, I think, before I do anything else. Because it's nice being done at noon.

And lunch is a powerful motivator.

Well, done with the writing anyway. The rest of the day will be devoted to exercise, research, award reading, and eventually a little recreation.

Karen Memory proceeds apace. I got to introduce a historical character I'm delighted to have in this book, and rig a fight scene with onions. And now my underslept self is calling it a night.

Things researched today include: Rutherford B. Hayes (a surprisingly cool dude despite his rather poor reputation, it turns out), United States currency in the 1870s, period cookery, NECCO wafers, and cod knows what else.
