I'm working on "The Deeps of the Sky" tonight, and generating a regular festival of Words Word Don't Know:

luminesced, tropopause, sheeny, thicks, unnavigable, dartlike,

Meanwhile, I had a little argument with myself on twitter as to whether I should use some modestly bogus science to create a cool special effect. I went with it. ;-) Now I'm stopping because I have to figure out how the protagonist intervenes to stop the Bad Thing from happening, or how he mops up afterward...

Oh, I might have just done so. Woot!
matociquala: (superhuman)
I just hit 201 pages and 40,050 Microsoft words/50,250 manuscript words on Shattered Pillars, counting outline notes. Since the book is supposed to run about 500 pages long in standard manuscript format, this is a very good sign that it might in fact be getting finished on deadline--especially since I am almost always slower on the first half of a book than the second half.

In any case, I've moved from the phase where I have no idea how I'm going to come up with enough stuff to fill a whole book to the phase where I'm like, zomfg there's no way I can cram all this plot and cool shit into another 300 pages. Which is also always a very positive sign that this is all going according to plan.

And I'm actually kind of enjoying what I'm writing. I think this wilfully not closely tracking wordcount thing is working out. I'm keeping an eye on my pages, but somehow that's currently stressing me out less.

I'm going to write as much as possible tomorrow and Friday, and then I am taking the weekend off. Among other things, there's a tub to finish fixing, and a chest freezer to lug to the basement, and a big branch broken mostly through high up in a tree in the side yard that needs to be removed the rest of the way before it becomes a class-A widowmaker. Also, there's an 11/11/11 party I want to go to Friday night. ;-)

Also, it'd be nice to have a day off to do some kayaking and see my friends and stuff. As long as I can still be assured of knocking this deadline out of the park.

It's publication day for Blood and Other Cravings, edited by ellen_datlow, in which you will find not only my story "Needles" (which is a bit of a Near Dark homage, and some other things) but also stories by Carol Emshwiler, Margo Lanagan, Laird Barron, Barry Malzberg... oh, just go look at the table of contents.

Still hacking away at Shattered Pillars. Four more pages today.
matociquala: (writing steles burning)
darling today:  It was not the Wizard Hong's first execution, nor even his first burning.

I'm still using my birthday mug, because it's my birthday mug and I can:

2011 09 12 daily commute

2000 words, which gets me to 20K, and also past 100 pages. A quarter of a book! There, that feels like some PROGRESS has been MADE.

I am trying to decide if tomorrow, I get to describe a daring rescue, or an immolation. Or maybe I will put that off for a few days while I think about it, and I will work on this confrontation at court. Mostly today I have been describing architecture.

I love my job.
matociquala: (writing steles burning)
2000 words on Shattered Pillars today, which means it's quittin' time. The plot is ticking along nicely, and I just it the end of Chapter 5. I have 90 manuscript pages, which means that Monday, with luck, I will hit the magical hundred page mark where it starts feeling like there's some actual substance to the book.

And now, time for other things.
matociquala: (ruffian)
Word knows "geomantic" but not "chirurgeon."

And that's eight pages on Shattered Pillars, as the plot continues to thick. It's flowing well now. I love my job.
matociquala: (sf doctor FANtastic!)
This concept of "ending a workday" is just brilliant. Why didn't I think of this years ago?

Oh, right. Panicky need to justify my existence by doing six times more than everybody else.

A thousand words and a few extra to roll over to tomorrow.

And now, lunch.
matociquala: (superhuman)
I am enamored--enamored--of the current permutation of my Taxi Driver Protocol (work harder on good productive days; do the required minimum on the rest). Right now, the plan is: I must write 1,000 words. If it's flowing, I can keep writing to wherever I feel like quitting: if it's not, I get to stop and do something else.

This is in preference to grinding, grinding, grinding away at the book no matter what. Because frankly? I have been working too hard for too long, and it's bad for me.

I have written four pages on Shattered Pillars, bringing me to the end of Ch. 4. I'm about to send this chunk out to some beta-readers to see if any of them like it.

So now I am going to eat some food and pay some bills (not fun, but there you go) and then read until it's time to go climbing.
matociquala: (lion in winter broken because you're bri)
The development of yet another sentence:

Temur pushed bread through salted oil, and paused

Temur pushed bread through salted oil, but paused with the

Temur pushed unleavened bread through salted oil, but paused with the dripping scrap

Temur pushed unleavened bread through salted oil, but hesitated with the dripping scrap poised over his plate.

Some people are linear. And some people are me.

2000 words on Shattered Pillars today, which is conveniently double the day's quota. I don't want to jinx myself, but I'm noticing more luck in getting into the zone--the fictional dream--with this book than I have had for a long time. Some bits just flow, and have that spark and loft that I've been having to manufacture through sheer cussedness lately.

I hope I can get back some of the ease and fluidity with which I used to write. This has been very hard work for a very long time now.

2011 09 05 daily commute

tea: Upton young hyson

And now, off to read somebody else's book. As soon as I eat some lunch and answer this email I was saving as a reward for when my work was done.
matociquala: (rengeek fucking silence)
Another thousand words on Shattered Pillars today, despite personal obligations involving my best friend and his birthday cake. Not a banner day for The Discipline, but it could, quite frankly, have been a lot worse.

I now have a tenth of a book, at a projected/contracted 500 pages/120K, as I am halfway down page 52. Actual, palpable progress. I have also broken 10,000 MicroSoft words. Which are not quite like real words.

Tomorrow, more work.

Right now, via [livejournal.com profile] kafkonia, a newish She Wants Revenge video, which is--after the nature of She Wants Revenge--both curiously derivative of 80's gothy alt music (Joy Division, Bauhaus, Peter Murphy &c.) and also uncannily sexy and even more uncannily creepy.

I noticed that the Male Gaze in this one was probably a serial killer around the fifty second mark, personally....
matociquala: (writing eternal sky rog)
Another four pages of Shattered Pillars today. I've decided that I need to adjust my goals, since it seems like what my brain can do right now without too much straining is a thousand words. So a thousand words it shall be, and I will try to accomplish that each day.

The book is getting written, and it will be a good book, and that is what matters, not my workaholic tendencies.

I have ideas for the rest of this scene, and the next few scenes... and I'm liking the words I'm writing... but actually getting them on paper, currently, is a slow and picky process.

I think I'm okay with that. I have four months to write this book; I can afford slow and steady and meticulous. As long as it's sufficiently steady to make up for the slow and meticulous part.

Honor your process, boys and girls. Even though it's bound to be different every book. Books do not get written by ignoring what works to get them writ in the service of what we think we should be doing.

And word of a nice sub rights sale today, which will (among other things) pay for the replacement laptop that's becoming less and less optional. I'll tell you more about it once contracts are signed.
matociquala: (writing genocide)

3,903 words on the story that will eventually not be called "Spellslinger" today.

And draft. Sloppy and I changed my mind several times on the way through, but thankfully writing is not a performance art.

As a reward, tomorrow I don't have to write.

And now I get to sleep. Sleeeeeep nooowwwww.

Good night, tubes.

1,000 words of "Spellslinger," which I think needs a better title, bringing it to a total of 6K MS word count.

Nothing left but the climax, the denouement, and the kicker. I think it'll run about 10K total.

Tomorrow looks to be a busy day obligationwise, so it may get a big fat push on Friday to see if I can finish a draft. Then it can sit until after Armadillocon to await revision, and I can work on a draft of "The Leavings of the Wolf."

Which really ought to get itself finished next week, yah.

You hear me, stories? You're going DOWN.
matociquala: (comic tick ninjas hedge)

I managed 500 words on "Gods of the Forge" this afternoon, and cut about 300 words of no-longer useful notes. I have four and a half scenes left to write, and I'm thinking maybe my best plan is to sit down Tuesday or Wednesday and just do it, as it were--which means starting over from the beginning, because I changed my mind halfway through what the damned thing was about. But that's okay. I can do this thing.

I'm kind of tired out, though, and it's hard to focus.

And I have other work on even shorter deadlines. Like my crits for Odyssey, which I am guest-lecturing on Friday. And then there's Clarion in two weeks.

And OMG, the page proofs for Range of Ghosts came. It's going to be a beautiful book, and I really need to get on those, too.

So. Much. Work.

But after all this is done, I have nothing going on until Viable Paradise. Except writing a novel.

matociquala: (criminal minds diana reid crazy)
Revelation for the day: MS Word does not know "Brigid" or "achily." But it knows Nijinsky.

WTF MS Word?

I think I'm declaring myself off the clock at 3500 words, which is 2000 for the day. Because I do not know what happens next.
