1500 words today on the welves, give or take. And I've been engaged in the auctorial pastime of updating my honeydew lists... and having one of those self-indulgent moments where it feels like it might actually be under control.

One of the things I've been meaning to chat about is the tendency of writers, and creative people in general, to really shit hard on themselves and their work. Stop me if this sounds familiar: Nothing you do is ever good enough; no daily wordcount is ever enough; no recognition is deserved...

Stop it.

Seriously.

Stop trash-talking yourself over your art.

That kind of unrelenting self-criticism is one of the best ways to (a) make it harder to work (human beings, like all mammals, respond to being punished by not wanting to do that particular thing again) and (b) eventually break your own creativity, if you keep it up for long enough.

There are enough people in the world who will tell you that anything you do is not up to their standards. No matter what you do, and no matter how hard you work at it.

Try giving yourself a cookie for good behavior now and again, instead. It works for pretty much everything.

We reward the behavior we want to see more of.

If you want to be more creative, don't punish your creativity. Reward it.

4th Street Fantasy is over for another year, and a good time was had by everybody who talked to me about it, at least. Dates for next year have been announced: June 26th-28th, with the usual pre-con party Thursday night and post-con sushi expedition Monday afternoon. This is a week later than usual, because of when we could get the hotel facilities we needed, so we will be a week before CONvergence rather than two weeks before.

I've also gotten the CEM of Karen Memory turned around and back to Tor, so all the hard parts of that are done. My only remaining duty is the proofs, and the advance reader copies should be out before long.

And as for me, I am stressed out and overwhelmed and completely freaking out about the amount of travel and conventions and writing left in 2014. So, because I have something going on every single weekend between now and the end of August, and because I need to the reassurance of a nice list I can cross stuff off of, I am reposting my honeydew list.

And the first lines meme, because it makes me feel a little more in control of what's in my in box:

"You've Never Seen Everything"
No one is making me say this.

"A Time to Reap"
Krissy paused in the wings stage left, in air thick with the smell of dust, imagining the
applause.

An Apprentice to Elves
Tin laced her fingers together across her gravid belly and frowned along her nose at the feeble human child.

Patience and Fortitude
Nothing made Matthew hate himself more than waiting for the elevator.

Smile
Pewter scraped across the black wave-caps of the Atlantic on the morning Carl Hughes learned how his lover had died.

"On Safari in R'lyeh and Carcosa with Gun and Camera"
"We wouldn’t be having this conversation if you'd flunked Algebra."

"Steel"
Johnny Backus was a daywalker. Johnny Backus was a vampire. Johnny Backus was a friend of mine.

"Cecily"
When Cecily was three years old, she announced that she was "stared of the scares," meaning the basement stairs. It stuck. Especially since Cecily wasn't scared--or stared--of almost anything else.

"Posthumous Jonson"
I loved you not.

"Periastron"
There are no unremarkable worlds.

"Gallowglas"
As the innate perversity of the universe would have it, Officer Jericho was up to her elbows in the guts of a roasted pumpkin as big as her chest when her pager shrilled.

"Flush"
The universe will always need plumbers.

Good gravy, I am out of spoons.

Also, I'll have an exciting announcement tomorrow. *g*

Criminy. And somewhere in here I need to write two more books.
matociquala: (criminal minds fate)
Whew. Well, I have been a productive bear!

[livejournal.com profile] stillsostrange and I survived the zombie run, despite bankruptcy (theirs), cold (Texas's), and insufficient packing (mine.)

I'm plugging away on Karen Memory, though I've hit that bit in the middle of the book where I have to stop and think about things. This is complicated by some reasonably scary family medical stuff that's causing me fairly significant anxiety. Still hoping to make my deadline, but it might be a near thing. Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] scott_lynch will be coming out to visit me after his Exciting Toronto Book Tour! (He's signing at the beautiful Bakka Phoenix this weekend!) and that will help make everything better.

But the really exciting news is that Emma and Will and I have finally finished "Dark Leader." Or at least, nearly. It's got one scene left to be written, and then it goes to beta read, and there will be NEW MUCH-DELAYED SHADOW UNIT. And after that, three more episodes. 0.0

And I just got a bunch of other small projects cleared up. So all that's left is Karen, really. And some nonfiction stuff I need to do.

45400 / 80000 words. 57% done!

I need to get on this. 0.0 Augh, deadlines and life.

And here's my honeydew list now.

Today is the first day of the rest of the book. I need a finished submission draft of Karen Memory by the beginning of January, and I expect to be pounding out words pretty much every single day between now and then--which means I need to shake off this lingering ennui and malaise and get to work in the old style. So I will be nanowrimoing on a slightly belated schedule, and I have about 70K to write rather than 50K, and I get more than a month to do it in. *g* (This is amusing to me, because usually November is a month off noveling for me, so I miss the fun. But not this year!)

8400 / 80000 words. 11% done!

Watch this space for updates and wordcounts and so forth. It's not the fastest I've ever written a book, and I have good confidence I can get there from here. (It's a good thing I'm superhuman.)

Right now I have three chapters of draft, piles of notes, and an outline-ish thing. More to follow....

Also, Now It Can Be Told: the SF Squeecast will be Social Media guests of honor for Windycon in Chicago in November, 2014. Hope to see some of you there!

And on that note, here's the current state of the Honeydew.

Off on the first leg of my trip to Brighton in a little bit here, to meet a much-delayed [livejournal.com profile] scott_lynch at the airport. Of course, I'm really starting to feel like I'm getting my teeth into Karen Memory, but I'm going to try to keep putting in at least one writing session a day on it, even while traveling.

We'll see how it goes...

I am home from Space City Con in Houston, where I got to visit NASA, met several real astronauts and one of my favorite make-believe astronauts (Gil Gerard, who played Buck Rogers), and was also privileged to meet The Doctor, and another the Doctor as well.

I played AD&D with some of the people who design it, and I went drinking with Klingons. (Klingons are the absolute nicest people, as I tweeted. I think they get all their aggression out at work.)

I also achieved a conditional Project: Valkyrie win, as I ran 5K in slightly under 30 minutes. It was on a treadmill, though, so it only sort of counts.

And I've just finished a draft of my Hieroglyph Project story, "Covenant," giving me something else to cross off my overwhelming to-do list.

Tomorrow, back to the CEM.

I ran very far this morning (especially considering the heat), and spent that time thinking about my story for Hieroglyph, which I am currently working on. It all seems to have come together, and now that I've shoveled out my inbox a little, I plan to spend the rest of the day working on it. The exciting thing is that apparently I am starting to rebound from the post-novel ennui and the deadline-based braindeath, and I'm actually excited about the story and full of ideas.

After that, I have to get back to the much-delayed "Dark Leader," and a Sekrit Projekt. And, of course, Karen Memory. At least I have a week or so before I have to leave for my next convention, which is Space City Con in Houston, which should be awesome!

After I ran, I had to stuff my face with STAT cake and ice cream to keep myself from keeling over. Out Of Breakfast Error. 0.0

By the way, [livejournal.com profile] scott_lynch and I will be teaching a workshop on advanced worldbuilding at Context in September. You can read about it here!

Come to 4th Street. It's tiny and awesome.

"Green and Dying" is more or less done at 15,000 words MS, 16,250 manuscript. I might have to add one more scene. I might not.

And now I get to take a break for a while, because my next major deadline is in August, though I mean to offer to pitch back in on the Shadow Unit episode I dumped 75% of on Emma and Will.

Time to catch up on Mythbusters, by gum!

And indulge myself with that long, long delayed bout of post-novel ennui I've been fighting off because deadlines.

Ding dong, the draft is dead.

That's "The Heart's Filthy Lesson," handed in at exactly the contracted length (10K: The manuscript is 10K manuscript (40 pages in manuscript format) ~9.3K MS Word.)

This old features writer still has enough column-inch damage that it feels awfully good to dial it after running 25% long on that damned book last month. *g*

Now there's just one more June 1 deadline I should really try to hit. And, oh yeah, a cross-country flight, two ten hour drives, and a convention guest gig in the middle.

Where's my fucking Wonder Woman icon?

Oh yeah, I'll be at Up In The Aether in Detroit this weekend with my beloved Mr. Lynch! Come out and play!

--30--

I just sent the manuscript for Steles of the Sky off to my editor and agent. It's only 30K over the contracted length.

*cries*

I guess it's a real epic fantasy now.

Damn. That was novel number 25.

...guess I better get on that overdue Shadow Unit episode, huh?

matociquala: (new england quiet before the work)
Before I head back to the comma mines to get to page 500, I had some awesome news today, resulting in cake and gin cocktails.

Tor will be publishing my Heroic Hookers Of The Outermost Wild West novel, Karen Memory, probably in 2015.

Via [livejournal.com profile] arcaedia, to [livejournal.com profile] casacorona, etc.

WIKTORY!

This means I don't have to write a book proposal this summer, and also that I'm not unemployed as of May 1st. *g*

Also, I will be speaking at the ALA conference in Chicago in June, between 4th Street and ConVergence.

And due to scheduling conflicts, there is a Shadow Unit schedule rejigger. The February episode will be airing in March, which means the remaining four episodes after that will all be pushed back a month apiece.

Which means its time for an updated Honeydew....

ITEM:
Range of Ghosts is out in trade paperback today! And, of course, the e-edition is still available wherever fine pixels are purveyed.

ITEM:
Shattered Pillars comes out March 19th, and has gotten rave reviews from Booklist (starred), Kirkus (starred), and now Publishers Weekly.

Says Booklist:
"Bear’s astonishing world building is in full swing here, and she builds the arcs of her two major characters into what hopes to be a brilliant whole in the forthcoming final book."

Says Kirkus:
"Second entry of a complex and beautifully rendered historical-fantasy trilogy." (the whole review is on their website, but very very spoilery.)

Says Publisher's Weekly:
"Bear drives the plot forward through darkness and loss, allowing her heroes little respite between trials as her villains gain power." (Complete review available here.)

ITEM:
I will be doing a small sort-of book tour to support Shattered Pillars, which will include signing dates in Massachusetts, Austin, and Minneapolis. Also, I will be over the con circuit this summer like brown on rice (what can I say, I eat hippie food), so come on out and say Hi!

(I'm trying to swing one more date in Austin, too.)
