A draft, a veritable draft.

3300 words today to finish off my untitled Shirley Jackson inspired SF story, which was supposed to be 7000 words and is 9500. AND IT'S DONE DONE DONE.

Well, okay, not done.

Because not revised, and I am waiting to hear back from an editor on how much it might need to be cut.

I FEEL LIKE [livejournal.com profile] scott_lynch! I'm MAD WITH POWER.

BUT DONE.

Also, O HAI THERE KAREN IS BACK! A new novella from Tor.com, edited by [livejournal.com profile] casacorona, entitled Stone Mad!
matociquala: (loose tea for loose women)

WIJHKTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With extra letters.
I just finished and handed in a draft of "Perfect Gun," a mil-SF short story about a boy and his war machine. And I got word that Stone Mad, which is the final title for the novella formerly called Rook and Ruin, has been accepted with its revisions.
matociquala: (bear by san)
Well, that's sort of a draft, ish, of Rook and Ruin.

If it keeps that title. Who knows?

32,000 words, and the denouement is a bunch of pieces on the floor, two of the characters need to grow a real relationship, and there's one scene left to write, but it's done enough for now.

Now I'm going to take a shower and put my pjs on.
matociquala: (spies avengers steed and peel needed)

4280 words today, to finish a draft of "En Libres."

An epic fantasy short story revolving around the protagonists's desire to finish their dissertations and collect their Ph.Ds, starring a postgrad centaur alchemist and a postgrad botanical thaumaturge.

Now I get Thai food, as my reward for virtue. And I get to goof off tonight.

I've already written six pieces of short fiction in 2015, which is as many as I managed in all of 2014.

Maybe something came unstuck?

Also, I'm being funny this year.

matociquala: (phil ochs troubador)
The storm is over and the sun came out. Everything is melting, only to freeze again soon. More snow in the forecast. I'll be very surprised if we don't break the record this winter. We're less than seven inches from it now. And that's all since the last week of January.

We have, dear readers, been getting thumped.

But I am having a very good day. For example, I just sold "The Bone War" to F&SF. It's the first fiction I've ever sold to that market! (I did sell them a poem in 2002. It was one of my first pro sales.)

ETA "The Bone War" is an Eternal Sky story set in Messaline between Book of Iron and Bone and Jewel Creatures, and involving Bijou, Brazen, and a rather... large... commission. /ETA

Yesterday I got almost eight pages on "And the Balance in Blood," which has been stalled for a month while I figured out how the hell it ended.  And today I wrote another four pages and finished it. It's done!

Okay, it's a draft. But it's done in draft at least. Here is some Proof of Tea and Writing!

Yesterday:

Tea: An Upton Darjeeling.
Teacup: Blue and white Chinese

Today:

Dog: snoring away the winter
Tea: Still the same Darjeeling
Teacup: The turquoise frankencup.

Oh, and I bought a new car. The Honda is old enough to vote, and just not up to the road conditions we're suffering in the hills of Massachusetts these days, so I'm looking to rehome it with a loving high school student or something. So last week that boy I like and I took ourselves down to a Subaru dealership and, you know, two days of our lives later we came away with a Crosstrek.

I love it to death already. And the fact that we got another six inches of snow last night is a contributing factor.

It syncs with my phone. I'm just saying.

And there's cover art for An Apprentice to Elves!

(I also got mugged by two pages of a novel I'm totally not writing because I am writing other things now. Ahem. They were good pages, though.)

I need a title for the Library Story. That--and revisions on the Worldspinner project--are next in the queue.

La.
matociquala: (evile overbear)
And then I finished the bard trolling story, which is now known as "The Wrong Story," because everybody's life needs a little Sondheim homage.

1362 words today. Tomorrow, I have to edit the sargasso lighthouse story, and find a title for it. And I also get to pick up that boy I like at the airport. I haven't seen him since November and I cannot wait.

The snow is now deeper than my dog.

Tea today: more genmaicha
Teacup today: Snowdrops

Now I'm gonna go lift (it's deadlift day!) and do a tabata class. Because exercise is good for us!
matociquala: (new england bare trees winter manchester)
I wrote close to 6000 words today. I finished a draft of the sargasso lighthouse apocalypse story, which is due Thursday and still needs a title, and I also did all the structural stuff on a piece that's been languishing for a year, which is the bard trolling story. Now it just needs the actual humorous bits.

I'm writing a lot of witty stories lately. But the sargasso lighthouse apocalypse is not that. It is SAD with a SADNESS. I was aiming for lighthearted buddy caper. I seem to have inverted the goal.

I did absolutely nothing else, except shovel the steps and eat some lunch.

Now I'm going to go exercise while I watch Agent Carter. My god, I'm tired.

There was tea. It was Upton genmaicha in the roseconfetti teacup, and I'm too tired to upload a photo.

"That day, Mr Earbrass wrote for so long and so hard that when he stopped he felt rather sick." Yes, I'm misquoting. I'm also too tired to go look it up.
matociquala: (writing karen memory)
Get out your notebooks, guys, I've got a lot of news.

Save the date-type object! I will be appearing at Pandemonium Books in Central Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts at 7 pm on THURSDAY FEBRUARY 12th (That's Boskone Eve) for a Karen Memory book launch! My beloved Scott Lynch will be with me, shilling his own stuff!

There will be cookies!

Also, Cynthia Sheppard, my awesome cover artist, just won the IBA Grand Prize for her cover art for said Karen Memory! Not bad, not bad at all!

Also, I finished a draft of "The Bone War" today and wrote nearly 3,000 words doing it. My butt hurts. But I'm very pleased with how it seems to be coming out/shaping up. It's a Bijou story, it involves paleontologists and making fun of academics, and I'll let you know when you can read it somewhere!

Here is the tea that helped:

It's Upton gen mai cha, and I bought the teacup in Iceland. Because I'm somebody who has been to Iceland now.

Winter is finally here, speaking of ice (see what a good segue that was?!), and the cold made the windows pretty last night, I brought some proof.

matociquala: (writing gorey earbrass conscious but ver)

Everything is pain. Especially my left hip. And my brain.

But something like a draft is done, and mailed off to [livejournal.com profile] truepenny, [livejournal.com profile] casacorona, and [livejournal.com profile] arcaedia. The end is a horrific kludge, and I don't care.

I'm going to drink a beer and eat curry.

matociquala: (ace the wonder dog)
I have successfully completed a draft of a short story: the Moscow metro dog organlegging story.

It needs some work, but a draft is a nice thing to have. I'm having a really nicely productive year so far. I'd like to keep this up.

Now I'm going to eat something, and then I'm off to Vericon!

I bring you germs from Tucson, Boston!
matociquala: (writing gorey earbrass conscious but ver)
I am done with my graceless heart.
Tonight I'm going to cut it out and then restart.

It is done.

Final wordcount is a little over 106,000 words.

Have some Florence and the Machine to celebrate.

matociquala: (criminal minds boom)
I have finished the draft of "No Place to Dream, but a Place to Die." It needs the thematic and character arc shored up a bunch on the revision, but the plot is there, and that's all I care about right now. More to follow.

But first, I have my edit letter for Karen Memory, and starting tomorrow that needs to be happening. Wow, it's such a damned nice feeling to get things off my desk.

Often, working on a novel feels like spinning your wheels for months and months and months--because there's work, endless work, and it's all on the same thing, and it never feels like you will get to get your brain back and do something new. But the end is in sight, here.

And not to bury the lede, but! Shattered Pillars is longlisted for the David Gemmell Legend Award! (So is a book by that boy I like, ahem.) And EVERYBODY ON THE INTERNET CAN VOTE ONCE.

Ahem.
matociquala: (comics invisibles king mob)
I am home from Space City Con in Houston, where I got to visit NASA, met several real astronauts and one of my favorite make-believe astronauts (Gil Gerard, who played Buck Rogers), and was also privileged to meet The Doctor, and another the Doctor as well.

I played AD&D with some of the people who design it, and I went drinking with Klingons. (Klingons are the absolute nicest people, as I tweeted. I think they get all their aggression out at work.)

I also achieved a conditional Project: Valkyrie win, as I ran 5K in slightly under 30 minutes. It was on a treadmill, though, so it only sort of counts.

And I've just finished a draft of my Hieroglyph Project story, "Covenant," giving me something else to cross off my overwhelming to-do list.

Tomorrow, back to the CEM.

Come to 4th Street. It's tiny and awesome.

"Green and Dying" is more or less done at 15,000 words MS, 16,250 manuscript. I might have to add one more scene. I might not.

And now I get to take a break for a while, because my next major deadline is in August, though I mean to offer to pitch back in on the Shadow Unit episode I dumped 75% of on Emma and Will.

Time to catch up on Mythbusters, by gum!

And indulge myself with that long, long delayed bout of post-novel ennui I've been fighting off because deadlines.

Ding dong, the draft is dead.

That's "The Heart's Filthy Lesson," handed in at exactly the contracted length (10K: The manuscript is 10K manuscript (40 pages in manuscript format) ~9.3K MS Word.)

This old features writer still has enough column-inch damage that it feels awfully good to dial it after running 25% long on that damned book last month. *g*

Now there's just one more June 1 deadline I should really try to hit. And, oh yeah, a cross-country flight, two ten hour drives, and a convention guest gig in the middle.

Where's my fucking Wonder Woman icon?

Oh yeah, I'll be at Up In The Aether in Detroit this weekend with my beloved Mr. Lynch! Come out and play!

--30--, sorta

Well, I am declaring this thing a draft.

It's not by any means a good draft, but I've had the realization that I can't actually write the climactic three or four chapters of the novel until I go back and fix all the bits of things I need to fix in the earlier chapters of the draft, because it includes adding a lot of new material, and that material has a direct bearing on the emotional climax of the book.

I can't do that in the next four days, and I need some distance from the book right now anyway.

So currently, those chapters are represented by a reasonably detailed scene by scene outline. And about 100 unwritten pages of manuscript.

My drop dead date for the book is May 1; by then I will have fixed all this stuff and created a publishable manuscript.

Stories are hard.
